The Gatuyaini Cooperative is a member of the Othaya Cooperative Society in Nyeri County on the southwestern slopes of Mount Kenya. As many of the cooperatives on Mount Kenya, this cooperative processes coffee from farmers whose plots are on average half an acre in size, with about 250 coffee trees each. The cooperative includes 785 farmer members, who grow coffee nearby. We are so proud to work with this cooperative, whose mission and goals align with our own, and whose meticulous work in growing, harvesting, sorting and processing yields some of the most outstanding coffee we've ever tasted!
Nyeri is traditionally known as the heart of Kenya's "black gold": coffee. Nyeri County has cool temperatures and fertile central highlands. The strikingly red volcanic soils that are unique to this region are rich in phosphorus and well drained. Most of the coffees from Nyeri develop and mature slowly, producing extra hard, high-density beans. Be sure your grinder is in good shape, set it a little coarser than usual, and get ready to craft a cup to savor!
